Summer is a wonderful season filled with fun adventures from start to finish and also the perfect time to enjoy those activities with your beloved family pet. However, your pet care routine will need to change as we head into the warmer months.
Here are some tips to keep your pet healthy this summer.
The summer season is a time where fleas, ticks, and other parasites are more active. Given that dogs and cats are likely to spend even more time outside, it’s vital that you protect your pets at all times. Make sure you are up to date with your flea and tick prevention and if spending time near the bush, make sure you do a daily tick check.
Grass seeds may not seem like the biggest danger to your pets, but the sharp ends can easily penetrate the skin. Once inside, grass seeds can cause damage to every part of the body. In severe cases, surgery is needed to remove them.
It’s important to check paws after long walks and consciously avoiding long grass is highly advised too. If you do find a grass seed embedded in the skin, it needs to be removed as soon as possible. If you cannot do this, contact your local vet clinic.
The summer sun can make roads, concrete, and pathways almost unbearable for pets to walk on. A helpful trick is to place the back of your hand on the ground. If it is too hot for your hand, then you shouldn’t let your pet walk on it.
Pets feel the heat just like the rest of us, which is why it may be preferential to go for walks and other activities in the mornings or evenings. The midday sun has the potential to cause heatstroke and is especially difficult for brachycephalic breeds (dogs with short noses) like bulldogs and mastiffs. Always make sure your animals have ready access to water and shade and never leave them in a hot car.
Dogs love the water, and it can be an excellent way for them to cool down. However, lakes and other water bodies can be packed with bacteria that can cause ear infections. If they start to scratch their ears or shake their head, book an appointment with your vet.
